Aizawl City Sight seeing

A beautiful hill city, Aizawl is the capital of Mizoram. It is at about 1132 metres above sea level. Flanked on the north by the lofty peaks of Durtlang Hills, the city is set on ridges of steep hills overlooking the sylvan valley of the river Tlawng in the west and of river Tuirial in the south and east. This picturesque and peaceful city also commands exotic landscape of verdant hills stretching away to the horizon. Aizawl is an ideal destination for people looking for fresh environment and the feel of nature.

Entry formalities:

For Domestic tourists, Inner Line Pass (ILP) is required for entry into Mizoram for persons other than government employees. ILP can be obtained from the Liaison Officers posted at Mizoram Houses from these cities New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar, Vellore and Bangalore. It can also be obtained on arrival at Lengpui Airport. Two passport size photos and a photo I.D is required for obtaining ILP.

Foreign nationals have to register themselves at the office of Superintendent of Police (CID/SB) Mizoram within 24 hours of arrival. However, citizens of Afghanistan, China and Pakistan require prior approval of the Ministry of Home affairs before entering the state.

Getting There

  • By Road: National Highway 54 connects Aizawl with the rest of the country through Silchar. The bus journey from Silchar to Aizawl usually takes about 6 hours. Mizoram state Transport Buses runs two inter-state bus services, one to Shillong in Meghalaya and another to Guwahati in Assam. A number of private bus services and sumo services are also available form Guwahati, Shillong and Silchar. Sumo services are also available from Aizawl to border towns of Tripura and Manipur.

  • By Train: Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram is 180 kms from Silchar in Assam, which is the nearest railhead. Mizoram State transport buses ply between Aizawl and Silchar daily.

  • Mizoram has daily flights from Kolkata and Guwahati by Air India and Jet Airways.

Hmuifang – Thenzawl visit

Located at a distance of 50 kms to the south of Aizawl, Hmuifang Mountain with an elevation of 1619 metres is still covered with virgin forests reserved since the days of the Mizo chiefs. Hmuifang Tourist Resort, located at the scenic peak of the mountain, has been created and maintained by the Department of Tourism. The resort has comfortable accommodation offering 6 double rooms and a cafeteria. The patches of grasslands on the peak are also ideal for picnics and outdoor camping. From here, one may visit the Mizo villages situated on the hillsides – Hmuifang village, Sumsuih village, Lamchhip village and Chamring village, to see the typical rural life of the Mizos.

Thenzawl is about one hour drive from Hmuifang. The Tropic of Cancer runs through this picturesque village. It is an important center of traditional Mizo handloom industry. The looms at thenzawl produce rich and colorful varieties of handlooms and one can obtain Mizo handlooms at bargain prices here. Other tourist attractions at  Thenzawl include Vantawng Fall which is at a distance of 5 kms south of Thenzawl. Vantawng Khawhthla or Vantawng Fall is the highest and most spectacular of all the waterfalls and cascades.
