The shape of the modern world has been credited to the advancement in science and technology and the engineering field of science and technology has been the major contributory factors towards achieving the scientific market of today. The challenge of discovery, improvements and modifications to various machines, equipment etc., gives tremendous satisfaction and thrill to engineers. Engineering is no longer limited to the old-fashioned division of civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, but offers many other fields to specialize in.

Engineers work with structures, tools, machines, metals, chemicals, etc. and use their alertness of mind and creativity to innovate and create new things or bring modifications to already existing machines.

Engineering is not so much one career, as an expertise which opens doors into a vast range of jobs. Engineers probably have a wider choice of environment in which to work, and a greater variety of jobs, than is possible in any other profession. This is because there is vast scope for engineers in advanced areas such as automobiles, thermal engineering, ultrasonic, vacuum technology, polymer technology, communication and computers, and many more areas.

Interestingly, women who have gone into engineering are also doing well.

Environmental Science PROFESSION

With the rapid increase in the human population, an increased disruption of the natural environment and increased pollution, there is a greater awareness of the need for protection our natural resources.

The principle that current economic progress should not endanger the prospect of future generations has fostered the business of environmental protection. The efforts towards clean air, water protection, noise abatement, waste management, pollution control and the like require new goods and services creating many more jobs. Environmental science as a profession promises tremendous employment opportunities for environmental scientists.

Environmental science, as a discipline, is a composite of both natural and social sciences. At its roots lies natural history and the science of ecology, resource management and resource technology are also significant features of environmental science. With the realizations that our resources are finite there is also the awareness that our lifestyles affect the environment and that we need to adopt an attitude of stewardship in order to make our resources last as long as possible. Demography is therefore also linked with the study of environmental science.

Opportunities in this field are immense, not only for environmental scientists, but also for environmental engineers, environmental biologists, environmental modelers as well as environmental journalists.

Women too can play an important role in this field, not only as environmental scientists, but also in organizing public opinion in favour of basic civic sense and the maintenance of hygienic conditions, as also in favour of energy conservation. There is also a tendency among environmental scientists and non-governmental organizations to form coalitions with various feminist groups, human rights advocates, anti-nuclear weapons protesters and other such public interest groups.
