Agha Khan, Prince karim (b. 1936) : The 49th Imam of Ismailia community, a sect of Shia Muslims. Richest head of any religious sect. Educated at Harvard, he succeeded his grandfather in 1957 as the Imam of his community. Claims to be a direct descendant of Prophet Mohammad.

Aldorino, Kaiane : 22-year old Ms. Kaiane Aldorino of Gibraltar won the 2009 Miss World crown at a glittering ceremony which was organised in Johannesburg, south Africa on December 12, 2009. She defeated 111 contestants from across the globe. She is an HR clerk by profession.

Amano, Yukia : Mr. Yukiya Amano, a Japanese diplomat, was elected as the new Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on July 3, 2009. He succeeds Mr. Mohamed ElBaradei. He is the 5th DG of IAEA.

Amrithraj, Vijay (b. 1953) : India’s former tennis star. Recipient of Main Fair Player to win Hasll of Fame Tennis thrice. Appointed UN Ambassador for Peace.

Amte, Prakash : Dr. Prakash Amte, son of Gandhian-humanitarian late Baba Amte, was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for 2008 for community leadership on August 31, 2008. Mr. Amte has been working for the improvement of the lives of Madia Gonds tribe in eastern Maharashtra for a long time.

Ang, Rita: A veteran Mount Everest  climber, who has conquered the world’s highest peak ten times. Nicknamed ‘snow leopard’, Ang Rita rewrote a mountaineering record in May 1996 by reaching the 8,848-metre-high summit of the Mount Everest for the tenth time without using oxygen.

Arora, Aastha : The baby born at the Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi on May 11, 2000 was officially designated as India’s billionth citizen.

Attenborough, Richard  : A British actor-director. Known for his film Gandhi, which won eight Oscars in 1983.

Bahuguna, Sunderlal : Indian environmentalist and leader of Chipko Movement.

Bajaj, Ajit : Indian adventurer who unfurled the tri-colour at the South Pole on India’s 58th Republic Day on January 26, 2007.

Bajaj, Rahul : Son of noted philanthropist jamnalal Bajaj; Chairman of Bajaj Auto First Indian to be elected Chairman of the World Economic Forum, Davos, as also Co-Chairman of Commonwealth Business Council. Mr. Bajaj is also a member of Rajya Sabha .

Baloch, Kiran : A cricketer of Pakistan’s women’s team, created the new world record of highest individual score in women’s Test against West Indies in Karachi (Pakistan) on March 17, 2004. She bettered the earlier record of 214 runs scored by Mithali Raj (India) against England in Taunton (UK) on August 17, 2002.

Bancroft, ann : First woman to reach North Pole. Was one of the six-member US-Cananian expedition which reached North Pole on dog sledge in April 1986.

Bhagwati, P.N. : The retired Chief Justice of India, was unanimously elected chairman of the United Nations Human Rights Commitree. He is the first Indian to be elected a Chairman of a treaty body under the International Human Rights instruments.

Bhambri, Yuki : Yuki bhambri of India won the Australian Open boys’ singles title in Melbourne on January 31, 2009. He defeated F. Georgoudas of Germany 6-3, 6-1.

Bhatkar, Vijay : Former Executive Director of Centre for Advanced Computing (C-DAC), the renowned computer Scientist is the man behind the country’s first super computer “Param”.

Bhattacharya, Kanchan Choudhry : Became the first woman Director-General of Police (DGP) In the country when she assumed charge as DGP Uttarakhand on June 17, 2004. She qualified for the 1973 batch of IPS, only the second batch for which women were allowed to apply.
